Woburn Win for Dupree

New England 9-Ball Series / Woburn, MA
by Skip Maloney
Joey Dupree faced and defeated Ivo Petro twice to finish undefeated in the New England 9-Ball Series event held on April 20. The $300-added event drew 22 entrants to Silver Cue Billiards in Woburn, MA.
Early in the day, Dave Fernandez, who’d been sent to the one-loss bracket by Dan Simoneau in the first round, struggled back to come within a single match of facing Dupree in the finals. While Shane Cote, fresh off his defeat at the hands of Dupree on the winners’ side, was busy defeating Mike Mantchello, Fernandez was eliminating Pete Kramer, who’d fallen to Petro. With a strong 7-2 showing against Cote, Fernandez moved into the semifinal match.
In the meantime, Dupree and Petro were meeting in the winners’-side final, with Dupree earning the hot seat. Petro moved over and ended Fernandez’ strong run through the one-loss side of the bracket with a 7-3 win.
In a true double-elimination final, Dupree closed it out in the first set. Having defeated Petro 7-4 for the hot seat, Dupree won their second match-up of the evening 7-3 and earn the first-place prize.

Fernandez Breezes Through Billiards Field

New England 9-Ball Series / Chelmsford, MA

by Marc Dionne

Country Club USA in Chelmsford, MA, played host to 22 of the strongest billard players in New England September 9. The New England 9-Ball Series offered $1,476 in prize money, and Dave Fernandez claimed the lion’s share at the series’ first event of the season.

This event was small but was not lacking in talent. Tournament favorite Mike Dechaine surprised all by dropping his first match to Randy Labonte 7-6, and another upset Mark Morgan defeating last year’s third-place finale finisher Roy Morgridge 7-3.
After coming back from a 6-4 deficit to defeat Morgan 7-6, Dechaine settled for fourth place after Joe Dupuis topped him 7-4. Dupuis also won a seesaw match against Ivo Petrov in the semifinals 7-5 to advance to the finals against Fernandez. The Player of the Year wasn’t afraid of Dupuis, though, and proceeded to win the match 7-3 for the first-place victory.
