The 64-player single-elimination format employed at the World 10-Ball Championships has whittled the field down to its last 8 players.

Only one Filipino player remains—Demosthenes Pulpul won his match over Furuta Kazuo 9-4 to match up with Yang Ching-Shun of Chinese Taipei. Pulpul narrowly escaped with a hill-hill win to advance to play China’s Liu Haitao in the quarterfinals. Haitao, after ousting Tyler Edey of Canada 9-6, put Ralf Souquet out as well with a double-hill victory.

Former world 8- and 9-ball champion Wu Chia-Ching is still alive. Having fought through Italy’s Bruno Muratore, he then decimated Shane Van Boening, eliminating him 9-3. Wu’s challenge in the quarterfinals will come from Mika “Iceman” Immonen, who ousted Ko Pin-Yi of Chinese Taipei 9-6 and Mark Gray 9-4 to advance.

Another quarterfinal match will feature Darren Appleton of the United Kingdom and Charlie “The Korean Dragon” Williams. After eliminating Ryu Seung-Woo 9-2 of Korea, Appleton fought to hill-hill against Satoshi Kawabata before winning 9-8. Williams defeated Chang Jung-Lin 9-8 and Fu Che-Wei 9-5, both of Chinese Taipei, to reach the quarterfinals.

An all-Dutch quarterfinals rounds it out, with reigning world straight pool champion Niels “The Terminator” Feijen matching up with Nick Van Den Berg. Feijen eliminated Spanish champion David Alcaide 9-4 and then Marlon Manalo of the Philippines 9-6 to make it to the quarterfinals, while Van den Berg went through Sweden’s Marcus Chamat 9-2 and Jerico Banares 9-6.

The second round of the WPBA’s Pacific Coast Classic saw Kelly Fisher taking a journey to the west side of the chart after a 9-7 defeat at the hands of Yu Ram Cha. Fisher, who took over the top spot on the WPBA’s ranking system two events ago at the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. Cha will next face Monica Webb, who just bested Lisa D’Atri in a 9-0 whitewash.

Allison Fisher, though, continues on in the winners’ bracket, having won her second match against Kim White 9-4. Her next match will be against Kim Shaw, who defeated Melissa Morris 9-7.

Two others near the top of the rankings and looking to move up, Ga Young Kim and Xiaoting Pan, also won their second-round matches. Kim triumphed 9-4 over Caroline Pao and will next face Janet Atwell, who defeated Val Finnie 9-6, while Pan easily swept through Gail Grecar 9-2 and will play Gerda Hofstatter in her next match.

Kyoko Sone, who delivered a first-round defeat to the tour’s number-two player Karen Corr, lost her second match to Line Kjorsvik 9-7. Kjorsvik will play Dawn Hopkins in the third round. Hopkins sent Laura Smith west with a hill-hill win.

Young guns Anna Kostanian and Sarah Rousey are also set to meet in the third round, having won their matches over Belinda Calhoun and Helena Thornfeldt, respectively. The first round at the WPBA’s Pacific Coast Classic, hosted by the Chinook Winds Casino & Resort in Lincoln City, OR, has wound down, with some surprising upsets along the way.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the first-round matches revolved around the match-up between Karen Corr and Kyoko Sone. Corr, currently ranked number two on the women’s tour, was sent to the one-loss side by the Japanese player with a decisive 9-6 score.

Tiffany Nelson also enjoyed a quick trip to the west courtesy of Southern California’s Stacy Hurst, who defeated her in a 9-7 upset. And Yu Ram Cha bested Montana’s Morgan Steinman in a match that didn’t see Steinman lodge a game on the scoreboard.

Otherwise, the top seeds have come through in the first round. Kelly Fisher, the tour’s number-one player, easily handled Irene Henry 9-2, while Allison Fisher bested Maureen Seto 9-1. Ga Young Kim, ranked fourth on the tour, had little trouble sending Supadra Boonpasook left 9-4, and third-ranked Xiaoting Pan won her match against Michelle Rakin 9-5.

Runner-up at the WPBA’s last event, Iris Ranola of the Philippines shows every indication that she is here to stay, besting Melinda Huang 9-3. Her next opponent will be Michell Monk, who just defeated Megan Minerich in a double-hill nail-biter.

Up-and-coming Anna Kostanian breezed through her first match, dealing a 9-0 loss to Stephanie Mitchell, and will next play Belinda Calhoun, who earlier bested Brittany Bryant 9-3. Jeanette Lee had little trouble with Colorado player Bonnie Plowman, sending her west 9-2, while Ewa Laurance also won her match with a resounding 9-0 score.
