Danny Turner made his way thru the top half of the chart undefeated he had some tough competition but he fought his way thru sending the following to the one loss side Tony Crescenzo in the first round 5-1; Luis Tovar 5-2; Steve Cox 5-3; Skip Coffey 5-1; Mike Newsome 5-3; Ed Killough 5-3 making his way to the finals to face David Southpaw Shadden, both players worked their way thru the field, Danny on the winner side and David on the one loss side to face each other in the Finals where Turner was victorious 5-2.

David Shadden was sent to the one loss side in the first round with a 5-2 loss to Steve Cox. Once on the one loss side he battled thru the one loss side to stay in the tournament. Along the way Southpaw faced and defeated Rory Dover 5-2; Calvin Le 5-0; Dennis Rose 5-2; Katie Cowan 5-0; Jeff Bumgarner 5-3; Roger Lewis 5-1; Mike Newsome 5-4 and with a battle to the end he came back from behind 2-4 to defeat Jason Turner sending him to the Semi Finals where he faced Ed Killough the players where evenly matched however David Shadden managed to take the lead defeating Killough 5-3.

Ed Killough rolled thru the bottom half of the chart sending his opponents to the one loss side beginning with but not ending with Ron Mayfield 5-2; Shannon Kinchen 5-2; Mark Stamey 5-2; going hill/hill he defeated Jim Bumgarner 5-4; Rich Fordunski 5-2; his winning streak was over when he faced Danny Turner and was sent to the one loss side with a 5-3 loss in the Hot Seat to face David Southpaw Shadden.

Dennis “The Hatchet Man” Hatch soared through his first Joss Tour stop of the season taking the event undefeated and adding yet another title to his list of tour wins. Taking place at Hippo’s House of Billiards in Utica, NY, a 33-player field turned out for the November 3-4 action.
Late on the winners’ side Hatch met regular top finisher Bucky Souvanthong in the hot seat match, and after a great battle Hatch slipped through 9-7. On the one-loss side, tournament director Mike Zuglan was making a comeback as he tried to add the elusive win to his own list of top finishes. Zuglan ousted Hongsavady Vongxay 9-7 then Norm Pomainville 9-5 in the quarterfinals. The last match on the one-loss side featured a great showdown between Zuglan and Souvanthong, each commonly find himself fighting for the top spot. This time around Zuglan was able to close things out a bit quicker and advanced by virtue of a 9-7 win.
With Hatch waiting in the hot seat, Zuglan took aim at him in the finals and stormed through the opening set 9-5 to force a final set in the true double-elimination format. The final set, however, was all Hatch. After winning the first game Hatch opened a five-pack to be up 6-0, and before long that extended to 8-0. Zuglan avoided the skunk with one rack but that was all before Hatch sealed the deal. Taking the final set 9-1, Hatch claimed the event and added another notch to his tour belt.

Billiard Education Foundation Visits Dallas High Schools

The first night of the 2007 high school billiard season was a special one for the students and teachers in October. Four Dallas-area high schools—the Sachse H.S. Mustangs, Naaman Forest H.S. Rangers, North Garland H.S. Raiders, and the Garland H.S. Owls—started their season practice session off with a visit from two Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) directors, Laura Smith and Dawn Hopkins.

Smith and Hopkins give instruction to teacher sponsors. The BEF directors are also competing players on the Women’s Professional Billiard Association Tour. Smith is a longtime professional player with the WPBA and was this year appointed as the BEF Executive Director. Hopkins, also a longtime professional player with the WPBA and ESPN commentator for the WPBA, is also a newly appointed BEF Program Development Director.

Smith and Hopkins’ visit to Dallas was to observe and gather information on the pilot high school billiard program founded by Earl Munson, who is the current program director for the high schools. The program here in Dallas is the first of its kind in the U.S. and is in its seventh year of operation. The BEF’s objective is to educate and promote high school billiards across the U.S.

Students and teachers were thrilled to have the two professionals attending the opening night of the season, in which 12 area high schools will be competing to see which school is the best in Texas. Dawn and Laura were gracious and excited to share their experience and knowledge with the teacher sponsors and even offered challenge matches to the students. The students and onlookers were awed by their high level of play, making that a night to be remembered.

Also in attendance for the opening night were several professional BCA instructors assisting with training the students, including Carl Oswald, a newly certified BCA Master instructor, of which there are only 14 worldwide; and BCA-certified instructors Earl Munson, Bill Suden, and Mike Winger.

Thanks go out to all the students and parents in attendance, as well as a big thank you to the teacher sponsors—Ann Marin, Carla Green, Sue Ellen Spangler, Caryn Teeling, Colin Avant—and BCA instructors Carl Oswald, Bill Suden, Mike Winger, and Mike Vincent. Thank you to AMF Richardson Lanes for the new equipment, and a great big thank you for making the night special goes to Laura Smith and Dawn Hopkins.

More Big Names at 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship
A total of 32 billiard players have now earned their positions in the knock-out stages at the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship. A further four groups played on Sunday in a total of 40 matches in the $400,000 event.
The most impressive showing of the day came from Francisco Bustamante of Philippines, who ran seven straight racks against Jeong Young-hwa of Korea en-route to a 9-0 whitewash.
Also in Group 9, Oliver Ortmann was one of a trio of former champions who made their way through with 2-0 records, including a superb 9-6 win over American Corey Deuel.
But Deuel (pictured above) was celebrating later in the day as he battled back to eliminate Filipino Antonio Lining, who had the unwanted record of being the first player from the Philippines to not make the Last 64.
Another former world champion performing well was Mika Immonen (Finland), who sealed his passage with an ill-tempered win over America�s Jeremy Jones, and the Philippines’ Alex Pagulayan.
Other Filipinos advancing were Ramil Gallego who hammered Asian 9 Ball Tour winner Chang Jung-ling of Taiwan 9-1 to be the top seed from Group 7.
Leevan Corteza also went through but not before dropping a game to battling Serbian Goran Mladenovic. The Pinoy star dumped Jeremy Jones out of the competition in the final match on the Group 12 losers’ side.
For Mladenovic it was a day to remember. Following his against-the-odds win over Corteza, he was well beaten by rising star Karl Boyes of England.
However, he made it through at the last with a gritty showing against Tyler Edey (Canada), that saw Edey dog a 9 ball to gift the Serb a 9-7 win.
Other notables on their way home include 2004 World Pool Championship runner-up Chang Pei-wei (Taiwan) and quality Filipino Antonio Lining.
The remaining 64 players compete on Monday and Tuesday, with the last 64 phase commencing on Wednesday 7th November.
Taking place over nine days, the event is televised live for over 60 hours by ESPN Star Sports of Asia and Sky Sports in the UK as well as being available over the internet via this website.
The format is groups of eight players competing in double elimination, with two wins seeing you through to the next round and two losses spelling defeat.
Play starts tomorrow (Monday) at 3.30pm as a further four groups battle it out.
Among those in action include - Ralf Souquet (Germany), Raj Hundal (England), Thorsten Hohmann (Germany), Fu Che-wei (Chinese Taipei), Thomas Engert (Germany), Li He-wen (China) and the unpredictable American Earl ‘The Pearl’ Strickland.
Local fans should have plenty to cheer about as Leonardo Andam, Jeff De Luna and Marlon Manalo are all in action.

With a further four billiards groups in action through Sunday, three former champions have made it through to the last 64 with impressive wins. Played out over nine days with a $400,000 prize fund, the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship is taking place at the Araneta Coliseum, Manila with 128 players from 46 countries vying for honors.
Finland’s Mika Immonen (pictured right), winner in 2001, battered Fahad Mohammadi of Qatar 9-3 in his opening match as he snapped off the last six racks. He followed that up with a hard fought 9-6 win over former US Open champion Jeremy Jones to secure his last 64 berth.
Filipino Alex Pagulayan, who claimed this title in 2004 in Taipei, scored two comfortable wins to go through to Wednesday�s straight knock-out round two. He beat Hamsa Mohammed, the first Eritrean player ever to compete in the World Pool Championship 9-0, and then took care of Austria�s Martin Kempter 9-6.
With a double elimination format in operation for the first round of the competition, players are required to win two matches to advance while two defeats means an early exit.
Finally, Oliver Ortmann, who took this title in 1996, looked every inch the contender this year. He beat Vietnamese Pham Tuan Ngoc by an over-whelming 9-1 score line and then put American Corey Deuel�s championship future in doubt with a top drawer 9-6 win.
Play continues on Sunday evening as 16 more players make their way through to the next round.
