Wipper Whips it Up
Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour / Quebec, ON
by InsidePOOL Staff
Susan Wipper took the third event of the Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour this season, winning over Veronique Menard in the finals. This stop was hosted by LeSkratch Billiards in Brossard the weekend of May 3-4 and attracted 22 women to compete for the WPBA qualifier spot.
Some of the favorites were sent packing early, leaving the outcome up to new future players Sunday. On the A-side in the final four, Marina Linguerri did not bring her A game, and Wipper sent her to the west side of the chart. In the semifinals, Linguerri faced off with local favorite Menard, who was on a mission during this match and ousted Linguerri in third place.
In the finals, Menard had to defeat Wipper two sets of races to 7. Both women had excellent run-outs, and in the first set, Menard made some great kick shots as well. With Menard winning the first set 7-4, and second set began.
Both ladies battled it out, knotting the score at 4 apiece until Wipper broke the chain and won two more racks to reach the hill. Feeling the pressure, Menard brought the score to double-hill. In the final rack, the match came down to the last four balls, and Menard had a miss on the 6 ball, giving Wipper the match.

Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour / Newmarket, ON
by Carolina Fernandez and Scott Soroko
Over the April 12-13 weekend, the Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour held its second stop at Big Wigs Billiards in Newmarket, ON, with 26 women and 45 men competing.
It was a tough competition in the ladies’ event, but Marina Linguerri of Ottawa came through undefeated to earn the qualifier spot. In the men’s event, young gun John Morra gave a flawless performance, taking the top prize.
In the one-loss bracket, Veronique Menard defeated Susan Wipper 7-3 and Darlene Gardiner 7-1, who settles for fourth place. In the final B-side match, Corrine Johnson shot outstandingly and stopped Menard in her tracks with a 7-3 score.
Having lost earlier to Linguerri in the hot seat match 7-4, Johnson must defeat Linguerri twice in the finals to claim first place. However, Linguerri takes an early 5-0 lead as Johnson struggled to get back in the game. In the next rack, Linguerri missed a 7-9 combination, leaving Johnson the run-out. That was the last rack Johnson took, though—Linguerri’s superior play saw her take her first tour win 7-1.
In the men’s event, youth came out once again when 18-year-old John Morra took first place. Mike Petrowicz met George Cornelius in the B-side final, and Cornelius setted for third place. Finally it came down to Morra versus Petrowicz for the top prize. Petrowicz was unable to match Morra’s play and was relegated to second place.

Belanger Brings Billiard Storm to Ontario
Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour / Barrie, ON
by InsidePOOL Staff
The Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour kicked off the season’s first stop at Dunlop Billiards in Barrie, ON. Despite the harsh winter storm that March 8-9 weekend, 17 players still traveled to Barrie with their eyes on the $1,000-added money, and after two days of solid playing, Denise “Da Bomb” Belanger swept the field undefeated, claiming the top position.
Belanger, just back in the pool scene, breezed through her first three opponents and then drilled Tina Meraglio 7-2 in the hot seat match. In the one-loss bracket, the field grew smaller as Naomi Williams defeated Leanne Amable 7-2 and Darlene Gardiner 7-2, who had defeated Maureen Seto 7-2 in the quarterfinals.
In the B-side final, Meraglio matched up against Williams. On fire, Meraglio quickly jumped to a 4-1 lead. Williams didn’t back down and knotted the score at 4 apiece, but Meraglio retaliated, employing patience and strategy to take the next three racks to win 7-4.
In the finals, Meraglio led 4-1 over Belanger, who struggled through some key shots that cost her. She got back in the game, though, with run-outs and safety play, bringing the score to 6-4 in her favor. In the last rack, Meraglio played an excellent safety, but Belanger went big with the shot and cut the 8 ball in the corner pocket, leaving her perfect shape for an easy 9 ball.

McMahon Earns Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour Win
Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour / Mississauga, ONT
by Carolina Fernandez
Anita McMahon turned the tables on Rachael Abbink to win the Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour’s August 11-12 event. Hosted by The Wooden Rack, in Mississauga, Ontario, this stop had 28 women pocket billiards players vying for first-place honors.
Sunday came down to eight strong players remaining. McMahon was on fire, taking out both Susan Wipper 7-5 and Naomi Williams 7-4, sending them to the west side of the chart. The field was growing smaller there, though, as a determined Abbink bested Denise Belanger 7-2, Marina Linguerri 7-6, and Wipper 7-4.
In the semifinals, Abbink took on the tour’s top point player, Williams. Abbink held a 5-2 lead, and with the alternate-break format, it didn’t look as if Williams would get many more chances. But Williams staged a comeback to make it a hill-hill thriller. Abbink broke and played safe, and when Williams missed her jump shot attempt, Abbink took ball in hand to run out the rack.
In the double-elimination finals, Abbink was in her groove, taking full control to win the first match by a strong 7-1 score. The second set was a whole other story, though—with a couple of early combos on the 9 ball and a run-out, McMahon reached the hill 6-3. Abbink was only able to take one more rack before McMahon won the match 7-4.

Johnson Commands Tiger Canadian Women’s Tour Stop
Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour / Burlington, ONT
by Carolina Fernandez
The Tiger Canadian Women’s Pool Tour held its fourth event of the 2007 season July 15 at Bobby D’s Billiards Grill in Burlington, Ontario. Out of the field of 27 players, Sunday saw the return of the top 8 of the event, with top honors ultimately falling to Corrine Johnson.
After defeating Grace Nakamura and sending her to the one-loss bracket, Johnson faced Denise Belanger in the match for the hot seat. Although Belanger is the higher-ranked player, she struggled throughout and wasn’t able to compete with Johnson’s precise shots and safeties, resulting with a 6-1 win for Johnson.
In the B-side, Terri “Tiger” Mason fought her way through to the quarterfinals, where she was relegated to fourth place by Brittany Bryant after a double-hill match. It was then Belanger’s turn to face Bryant, but a rattled 8 ball in the hill-hill match gave the win to Bryant. The double-elimination finals between Johnson and Bryant saw Johnson streak to a 5-2 lead, but Bryant fought back to close the gap at 5-4. A scratch by Johnson gave the table to Bryant, who hung the 8 ball, allowing Johnson to finish out the match with a 6-4 win.
