OB Cues Takes Over Longest-Running Regional Women

OB Cues Takes Over Longest-Running Regional Women’s Tour
The Hunter Classics Amateur Women’s Tour will have a new name in 2008. Wes Hunter, well-known cue maker out of Alamogordo, New Mexico, has been the sponsor of the tour for a record-breaking 15 years. After much discussion and inner-turmoil, Wes and his lovely wife Cindy have decided to focus their energies and pool cue-making activities toward enhancing their businesses. The Hunter Classics Amateur Women’s Tour held their last official “Hunter Classics Tour event” in February.
Board Member Melinda Bailey said, “the partnership that Wes has built with his name, custom cues, and all the women that participated in each and every Hunter Classics Tour event is without a doubt the best partnership we could have ever asked for.” Wes Hunter helped amateur women players to achieve their dreams and without Wes, this could not have been possible. Board Member Monica Anderson, added, “we applaud you for all you have done for us and wish you all the best in all your future endeavors. Thank You, Wes!”
It is with much excitement and honor that the tour still lives on. It has a new name, but the tour remains the longest-running, largest regional women’s tour in the country. In addition, no changes will be made – no fee increases or tour structure changes. Special thanks go to our new sponsor OB Cues. The new tour name is OB Cues 9-Ball Ladies Tour and the Owen-Bunnell organization will pick up the torch and carry on a 15 year tradition. OB Cues is best known for their OB-1 cue shaft – the vibration-damping core, radial consistency and low cue ball deflection gives you a cue shaft like you’ve never felt before. Board Member Julie Stephenson stated, “all the past, present and future amateur lady pool players appreciate what you are going to do for the tour and we welcome your sponsorship with open arms. Thank You, Don Owen and Royce Bunnell!”
Wes Hunter donated a Hunter Classics Custom Cue to every stop for the last 15 years. The custom cues were valued from $1,600 to $2,200 through the years, which helped raise raffle money for the host sites who adds $2,000 guaranteed to each event. Royce and Don will donate two to three OB Cues per stop – the total value will also be from $1,600 to $2,200. The tour will continue to have $2,000 added and the cues will help raise that money for the host sites. In addition to the $2,000 added, each OB Cues Ladies 9-Ball Tour stop will continue to be a WPBA Qualifier.

Kjorsvik Awesome in Austin
Hunter Classics Tour / Austin, TX
By Rick Davis
The Hunter Classics Tour kicked off the 2008 season with their first billiard tour stop at Fast Eddies in Austin, TX, where Norway’s Line Kjorsvik bested the 64-player field to take the title undefeated over the February 16-17 weekend.
On the winners’ side Kjorsvik started hot and blazed through five matches, including a 7-4 win over previous event winner, top finisher, and tour regular Tara McCracken, to reach the hot seat match. Matching Kjorsvik on the other half of the chart was Lisa Marr, who also took five wins and propelled herself to the hot seat match after drilling Helen Hayes 7-0. In the hot seat match Kjorsvik refused to let go and quickly built a lead and extended it for a 7-3 win.
Over on the one-loss side Kyu Yi and Amanda Lampert were racing towards each other after each took an early loss. Yi took six matches while Lampert took only one less before they clashed in the top eight. At the same time Melinda Bailey slid into the quarterfinals after a handful of matches that ended with the elimination of McCracken. Catching up to Bailey, Lampert knocked out Yi 7-4, eliminated Hayes, then fought down to the wire against Bailey before defeating her double-hill in the quarterfinals. Lampert had made an incredible run, although Marr had her number, and after eliminating Lampert 7-1 it was clear she wanted another shot at the title.
With the finals a rematch of the hot seat match Marr was looking to avenge her early loss and hopefully end this match the opposite way. As the score reached 6-5 in favor of Kjorsvik it could have been anyone’s game, but when the final ball fell Kjorsvik had defeated Marr again, this time 7-5, to earn the title from the Hunter Classic’s Tour first 2008 stop.

Lampert Tops on Hunter Classics Tour
Hunter Classics Tour / Richardson, TX
by Rick Davis
The Hunter Tour brought out their best players September 8-9 at The Billiard Den in Richardson, TX, where a 49-player field set their eyes on the title. Coming through it all was Amanda Lampert, who overcame six opponents to take the event undefeated.
On the winners’ side Lampert was in full control from the start. After a first-round bye she drilled Deedra Trammel 7-2 then skipped through a trio of matches to face Marissa Hallett in the hot seat match. Hallett had done her share of the work too, defeating five opponents on the way to the hot seat match, including a scorcher against Julie Stephenson 7-1. Neither player let up in the hot seat match, but it was Lampert who pulled ahead first and cleaned the match up with a 7-5 conclusion.
On the one-loss side it was Heather Lloyd who captured the attention of competitors and spectators alike as she ousted Leslie Anne Rogers double-hill as one of her stepping stones to the quarterfinals. In that quarterfinal match Lloyd dropped the hammer on Shayla Neris 7-3 then drilled Hallett 7-1 in the semifinals. With the title in their sights Lampert and Lloyd set out to settle the match, and in short order it was Lampert who tipped the scales and took the 7-3 win to claim the event.

Hunter Classics Amateur Women’s Tour / Corpus Christi, TX
by InsidePOOL Staff
Tropical Storm Erin moved away from the Texas coastline just in time for the Hunter Classics Amateur Women’s Tour to descend at Paradise Billiards in Corpus Christi, TX, August 18-19. The weather was beautiful, the sun was shining, and there was no bad water to be found, despite media reports earlier in the week.
Climbing through the brackets to meet in the hot seat match were Amanda Lampert and Heather Lloyd, with Lampert advancing with a 7-4 win. On the one-loss side, an over-two-hour match with numerous safeties ended with Leslie Anne Rogers over Terry Petrosino 7-4. Rogers went on to play Lloyd for third place, and it came down to one game. At 6-6, Lloyd was down to the 9 ball and was ready to bank it in the corner when someone got in her line of sight. She stood back up, readdressed the shot, and decided to shoot a thin cut instead of the bank, which she made.
This led to a rematch between Lloyd and Lampert in the double-elimination finals. Lloyd started off strong, sailing through the first set 7-3. The opposite result happened in the next set, though, as Lampert prevailed with some strong shooting to win 7-2 to capture her first Hunter Tour win of the year and the WPBA qualifier as well.
